Content is King
Providing content to your website is the only way that you will move up the ranks in the Google search results rapidly. While there is more to search engine optimization (SEO) than just writing high quality content, it all starts with the content that you are providing for your website.
If you want to know more about how content can help you in the search engines, continue reading. If you already know all about it, well then here is a picture of a cute puppy for your enjoyment.
Is Content a Benevolent King or a Tyrannical Dictator?
There are many different types of kings out there, so which one is content? It all depends on your personality and how much you enjoy relaying thoughts and ideas in written words.
Content the Benevolent King – Writing content for your website under the benevolent king is pretty straightforward. If you provide content, your site will be ranked better in Google. That is basically all that there is to it.
Content the Tyrannical Dictator – But Google needs to know a bit more about your content. You can’t just throw a bunch of words on your website and expect to have great results. You need to put time and effort into your content; show that you’re an expert.
So how do you make sure that you are appeasing the king when you are adding content to your website? There are a few key rules that you need to follow in order to make sure that your content isn’t going to be seen as a bunch of spam.
How to Write Search Engine Optimized Content
Most importantly, you have to be able to write in a clear and coherent manner. If your content is hard to read, or if it is full of grammatical errors, then you aren’t doing any favors for your SEO. As long as you can do that, here is what to keep in mind when writing your content.
Keyword Density – In the beginning, back before Google, search engines looked just for words. The more times a word or set of words appeared on the page, the better the page would be ranked. That meant if you loaded the bottom of the page, after the real text was done, with your keyword listed over and over, you’d hit the first spot. Google has done away with that. Now you have to keep it legible, make it easy to read. A keyword density of about 1% is ideal but by no means a requirement.
Length – Putting 100 pages with 100 words on each of them will get you 10,000 words on your site. Putting 10 pages with 1,000 words on each of them will get you 10,000 pages on your site. Which do you think will be better ranked? Google likes to see authority on subjects. Longer articles (1,000+ words) rank better than short articles (under 500 words).
Headings and Titles – If I posted a block of text with nothing more than line breaks between paragraphs, it would be cumbersome to read. But if I break things into smaller sections, maybe even throw in a picture here and there to help demonstrate what I’m talking about, then the page will be much easier to read. Make your pages easy to read.
Cite Your Sources – Outgoing links are important. Google wants to know if you’re an authority, or just spouting off your opinion. Fortunately, this is pretty easy to do. If you have a word that most people won’t recognize, a quick link to its definition can be put in place. If you talk about recent news, link over to an article talking about that news. If you have your own personal website, link to it.
Write for the Reader – The best way to have search engine optimized content is to write your content as though the search engines don’t matter. Write in such a way as to convey a concept, idea, thought, or story that will engage the reader and make them want to read it. The SEO will follow.
The last part is the most important.
Write for the reader; the SEO will follow.
If you can get your point across in 150 words, don’t drag it out to 500 just for SEO purposes. Instead, get your point across in one post, and then go into the finer details in another.
