SEO Quick Tip – Optimize Your Picture Sizes
Big Pictures Slow Your Site
As humans, we love visuals. That’s why Facebook shows pictures more than text. That’s why Instagram is a thing. That’s why cameras are ever-increasing their image quality and 4k video exists. The problem, however, is that as pictures get bigger, they take up more space. And when a bigger picture has to load on your website, the site slows down. There are two reasons a slow site is bad.
Search engines prefer sites that load quickly. It’s a sign of a well maintained site, and therefore more likely to be what the searcher is searching for. In addition, people prefer sites that load quickly. Our attention spans are short, and if we have to wait more than a couple of seconds for a site to load, we get irritated. To rank better, and appease your readers, your pictures need to be optimized for size. Here’s how to do that.
Resize with Photo Editing Software
Before you upload a picture to your site, consider how big it really needs to be. Do you really need a 10 megapixel image? That won’t even fit onto the vast majority of monitors. Or would it make more sense to drop it down to 1 megapixel (or less)?
When I upload images, I generally scale them down to about 2000 pixels wide (for landscape). I then scale them even further when selecting a size when inputting them into the page. Unless you’re a photographer and you need extreme detail; smaller images will work just fine.
Use an Image Optimization Plugin
Resizing your pictures can do a lot, but there are times you need to keep them a little bit bigger. In addition, you don’t want to lose the quality associated with a higher resolution image. To avoid degrading the picture, but also making sure that it keeps its quality, use an image optimization plugin.
On the Sery Content Development page we use Smush Image Compression and Optimization plugin. It’s simple, it works behind the scenes, and best of all: it’s free. Just install, input your settings, and all you have to do is upload the pictures. It will remove the “stuff” associated with the image, reducing the file size, but keeping the quality.
